Chapter Ten

As the rains started again, Matt drove through the night. He thought he’d learned one thing in his life—never let your guard slip. Never. You didn’t act impulsively or let insanity take over, and you didn’t expose your deepest needs to anyone. He’d done that in his life and paid dearly for it. But B.J. made him crazy. She brought out things in him that he’d thought he’d grown past. Obviously he hadn’t matured as much as he thought. A chuckle came when he thought about making out in a parked car. Damn it, he couldn’t even remember doing that when he was a teenager.

The phone rang and he reached for it. “Terrel here.”

“Matt, it’s Amy.”

He glanced at the clock in the car’s dash, and was a bit surprised to see that it was barely nine o’clock. It seemed an eternity since he’d spotted B.J. at the parking garage. “Amy, what’s up?”

“I’ve been trying to reach you all day about the quotes on the work for the outside area at the center.”

He realized that there had been a message from Amy earlier, and he’d totally forgotten to call her. “What about them?”

“Did you get quotes yet?”

“I’m checking on them and I’ll get to them as soon as I can, but I’ve got something really pressing to take care of right now.”

“The center’s important, Matt.”

“Of course it is, but I’ve got myself in a mess with some papers I inadvertently signed.”

“I can’t imagine you’d sign a paper before really looking at it,” she said.

Neither could he, at least, not until a green-eyed woman had walked in and turned his mind to mush. He knew exactly when he’d signed the paper, and why he hadn’t read it himself. He’d been distracted, wondering if B.J. was down at the center or not and wishing he hadn’t needed to go to New York on a red-eye. “Well, I’ll fix it and won’t do it again.”

“Oh, you probably will,” she said with good nature. “Human beings are easily distracted. It’s called life.”

Amy was remarkable, bringing up her little girl by herself, having been widowed at a time when she should have only been starting her married life. She knew all about distractions. “I’ll get some answers for you on that play area as soon as possible, I hope on Monday.”

“Thanks,” she said. A child started to cry in the background. “Cheer up, things could be worse,” she said. “You could have a two-year-old who’s spread chocolate pudding all over the floor. Talk to you Monday,” she said, then hung up.

He reached to hang up the phone, and hesitated when he noticed papers lying along the console on the passenger side. He dropped the phone in its holder, reached for the papers and saw the insurance forms from the garage that the attendant had given B.J. He thought of going back to give them to her, but knew he had work to do, work that couldn’t wait.

He dropped the papers on the seat and reached for his phone again.
