Chapter Ten
As the rains started again, Matt drove through the night. He thought heâd learned one thing in his lifeânever let your guard slip. Never. You didnât act impulsively or let insanity take over, and you didnât expose your deepest needs to anyone. Heâd done that in his life and paid dearly for it. But B.J. made him crazy. She brought out things in him that heâd thought heâd grown past. Obviously he hadnât matured as much as he thought. A chuckle came when he thought about making out in a parked car. Damn it, he couldnât even remember doing that when he was a teenager.
The phone rang and he reached for it. âTerrel here.â
âMatt, itâs Amy.â
He glanced at the clock in the carâs dash, and was a bit surprised to see that it was barely nine oâclock. It seemed an eternity since heâd spotted B.J. at the parking garage. âAmy, whatâs up?â
âIâve been trying to reach you all day about the quotes on the work for the outside area at the center.â
He realized that there had been a message from Amy earlier, and heâd totally forgotten to call her. âWhat about them?â
âDid you get quotes yet?â
âIâm checking on them and Iâll get to them as soon as I can, but Iâve got something really pressing to take care of right now.â
âThe centerâs important, Matt.â
âOf course it is, but Iâve got myself in a mess with some papers I inadvertently signed.â
âI canât imagine youâd sign a paper before really looking at it,â she said.
Neither could he, at least, not until a green-eyed woman had walked in and turned his mind to mush. He knew exactly when heâd signed the paper, and why he hadnât read it himself. Heâd been distracted, wondering if B.J. was down at the center or not and wishing he hadnât needed to go to New York on a red-eye. âWell, Iâll fix it and wonât do it again.â
âOh, you probably will,â she said with good nature. âHuman beings are easily distracted. Itâs called life.â
Amy was remarkable, bringing up her little girl by herself, having been widowed at a time when she should have only been starting her married life. She knew all about distractions. âIâll get some answers for you on that play area as soon as possible, I hope on Monday.â
âThanks,â she said. A child started to cry in the background. âCheer up, things could be worse,â she said. âYou could have a two-year-old whoâs spread chocolate pudding all over the floor. Talk to you Monday,â she said, then hung up.
He reached to hang up the phone, and hesitated when he noticed papers lying along the console on the passenger side. He dropped the phone in its holder, reached for the papers and saw the insurance forms from the garage that the attendant had given B.J. He thought of going back to give them to her, but knew he had work to do, work that couldnât wait.
He dropped the papers on the seat and reached for his phone again.
